The origin of green tea began in China dating back to 2737 B.C. According to legend the discovery occurred by accident when the Chinese Emperor Shennong mistakenly drank water that had a dead tea leaf in it. Emperor Shennong found the flavor incredibly refreshing and thus, a new beverage was created.Green tea was primarily available to the highest tiers of Chinese society and was very expensive to purchase. It was not until the 14th century that green tea became accessible to the general public for enjoyment and medicinal purposes.
The class will consist of tasting a varity of popular green teas available in the U.S. Plus, the correct method of steeping to achieve the best possible flavors extracted from the teas. Also, some historical information will be discussed by the host concerning how green teas became the beverage of choice amongst the Europeans and especially the British. Tea cakes and finger foods will be available on the day.
